6/15/12 Africa: Day 5
Today was a much needed day of rest and relaxation. The girls and I got up this morning and took a taxi down to the Accra mall to run some errands. It was definitely the most enjoyable taxi ride so far. The guy turned on Celine Dion and we sang along all the way to the store. We grabbed some breakfast at a little pastry shop in the mall, then went to the walmart-like store Game for random things we have since discovered we didn’t think to pack (like dishes so we don't have to use ziplock bags and cardstock).
(Typical scenery on our drives through the city)
We then met up with Helel and spent the afternoon at the beach. The day just kept getting better when they handed each of us a free bottle of fresh pineapple juice as we drove into the parking lot. We sat down under an umbrella and feasted on juice, kabobs, chicken, and rice. The vendors were as pesky as the flies, but we all ended up with new sundresses from one of these guys.

I enjoyed just lying on a beach chair listening to the waves and reminding myself every once in a while that I was looking at the ocean in Africa. It’s still hard to believe. I walked up the beach a little ways and saw some interesting old fishing boats that had washed up onto the shore.

We all went back to Helel’s house for a few minutes where we met up with one of his friends, then headed out to one of Helel’s favorite restaurants near his house in the Osu neighborhood. We had an amazing meal at Zion Thai Restaurant and surprised Liyam with a birthday cake that we ordered from the same Indian woman (who makes cakes out of her home) that Helel’s mom had ordered from the day before. It may be the best chocolate cake I have ever eaten.
It was a great day to unwind from the intensity of the last few days of moving to a new country and starting work at some difficult places. I think I now have the energy to face more adventures next week. We head for our first day at the refugee camp Monday morning.
